Waseca County declares short state of emergency to seek disaster-assistance funding after localized flooding

Speaker 4 told commissioners the preemptive declaration will permit staff to collect preliminary damage estimates from townships, the highway department, school districts and other public-infrastructure entities and is a required administrative step to pursue certain state disaster-assistance funding. "This is a required step in order to do so," Speaker 4 said, noting the county does not yet know whether damage will reach thresholds for federal or state assistance but that the declaration keeps options open.
Board members discussed road and shoulder washouts, river-crossing concerns and whether culverts or ditches required emergency repairs; staff said they are compiling damage information and will determine next steps once waters recede.
