County Recorder Tara Snyder asked the Aitkin County Board to set a $75 recorder fee per judicial‑security document under recently enacted state law to cover the labor and technical work required to mask the real property records of judicial officials and their family members.
Snyder told the board that implementation will require extensive work across the recorder's office, assessor, treasurer, auditor, surveyor, planning and zoning, IT and GIS; she said the county has 60 days after a certified request to mask public data and that anticipated request volume is unknown. She cited Minnesota statute 480.5, subdivision 6, as the statutory authority that authorizes a service fee up to $75 for filings related to judicial security.
The board moved to approve setting the $75 fee and carried the motion. Commissioners asked whether a fee previously existed; staff confirmed this is new. Snyder said all funds will be deposited into the recorder's general fund per the statute and that further operational impacts will be evaluated as requests are received.
