Same Day Solutions Fair partners, court liaison say program helps clear warrants and connect people to housing

Orange County — Service providers and a court liaison said a traveling "Same Day Solutions Fair" and a coordinated homeless court process are helping people experiencing homelessness clear low-level warrants and connect to housing.

A resident (Speaker 1) described the barriers that often prevent attendance at court: "When you're homeless, you don't always have a phone or you don't have, transportation or means to get to court," the resident said, adding that missed dates can lead to ‘‘a lot of warrants’’ and repeat encounters with the criminal-justice system. The resident also described the personal toll on a companion animal who had been to the pound twice.

A service provider (Speaker 2) said partners work "to take these low level infractions, some select misdemeanors, quality of life type offenses, link people with resources to address the underlying issue." The approach, they said, focuses on diversion and connection to support rather than prolonged enforcement.

Representatives coordinating with the court described an immediate outcome tied to that coordination. A service provider (Speaker 3) said they would send cases "over to the court," and a court staff member (Speaker 4) said the district attorney's office had already agreed. "Today, we will get 3 cases dismissed," Speaker 4 said, presenting the dismissals as a direct result of the homeless court process.

Speaker 3 added that resolving warrants and criminal matters can enable community organizations to offer housing: clients who can clear their legal barriers are easier to refer to housing providers, the speaker said.

Organizers described the Same Day Solutions Fair as a countywide effort that brings multiple services to one site. "People can access so many resources that often would take them a series of several trips to multiple locations," Speaker 6 said. A court liaison emphasized the Fair's goal: "Someone can come here and receive the service they need on the spot ... we wanna remove all barriers for people to be successful."

A participant (Speaker 5) described services available at the event — haircuts, meals and health services — and shared a personal outcome: after living in a car and facing many setbacks, the participant said they were "close to getting housed" and later reported being "successfully housed." The participant characterized the experience as a "wrap around love story."

No formal votes or ordinances were recorded in the session. Organizers and court staff framed the work as coordination among service providers, the court and the district attorney's office to resolve low-level legal barriers and speed referrals to housing and other supports. The immediate next step noted on the record was the planned dismissal of three cases through the homeless court process, per the court liaison's statement.
