The Finney County treasurer presented the quarterly report on idle funds and investments and explained how planned draws will affect future interest income.
The treasurer drew attention to the county’s laddered investments and a substantial deposit at Commerce Bank earmarked for the new EMS/Health Department project; those funds will be drawn down for construction and will lower expected interest income in coming years. The treasurer noted interest income rose to more than $3 million last year, but said recent Federal Reserve rate cuts will reduce yields going forward.
Commissioners asked about current CD rates and how short‑term deposits compare to longer investments; the treasurer said rates depend on market timing and compounding frequency, and reminded the board that the county’s demand deposit accounts compound more frequently than some CDs. No action was taken; the report will inform 2027 budget planning.
