Commissioners honor James Backus and Controller Chris Grayson for long service

Northumberland County commissioners recognized two longtime public servants during their Dec. 23 meeting, presenting certificates to James Backus and Controller Chris Grayson.
The board presented a certificate to James Backus "in recognition of having over 13 years of public service" with the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA). AOA representatives described the authority's work building recreational tourism, securing grants and returning revenue to local communities. AOA remarks in the meeting noted more than $1,000,000 in total support returned to municipalities and more than $500,000 returned directly to the county from AOAA activity; the authority also reported an annual payroll near $400,000 and an expected 45,000 visits in the year cited.
The board additionally presented a certificate to Controller Chris Grayson "in recognition of over 12 years of service as county controller." Commissioners credited Grayson with fiscal stewardship, oversight of audits and assistance in budget preparation. One commissioner said of Grayson, "He watches every penny," and another noted Grayson's longstanding role in guiding county budgeting decisions.
Both certificates were signed unanimously by the Board of Commissioners. The meeting concluded with holiday greetings and an invitation for attendees to join a reception with cake and photos.
