The Fairfax Town Council on Dec. 3 authorized two actions to advance the Fire Station 21 remodel: a third amendment to the professional services agreement with Fairchild Brahms Design and a lease for temporary office space at 21 Park Road.
Public Works project manager Kristen Arnold told the council the amendment will expand architectural services through permitting, bidding and construction, responding to plan-check inquiries, bidder RFIs and providing construction-phase oversight. "This amendment brings the total not-to-exceed amount with Fairchild Brahms Design to just under $158,000," Arnold said. The amendment adds $84,996 to the contract; staff said those costs were included in the project cost estimate presented to council in October.
Council also approved leasing a house at 21 Park Road as temporary office space for displaced staff while the community center will be used as temporary living quarters for firefighters. The lease is month-to-month at $3,500 per month for an initial 10 months (a $35,000 initial commitment); staff said the owners have indicated willingness to extend on a month-to-month basis if construction runs long.
Council members asked questions about schedule, contingency and whether construction management services might require a future amendment. Architect Jessica Fairchild said the amendment covers anticipated architectural services through the end of the project and that a separate construction-management agreement could come later if needed.
What’s next: Staff will proceed with permit submittals and the public bid process; council requested that any lease extensions or future amendments include price protections where feasible.
