Commissioners debated local education spending and oversight and approved a motion requesting more detailed budget presentations from the Beaufort County School System and Beaufort Community College. The motion asks that next year’s budgets be presented by purpose and function, accompanied by a listing of job titles and salaries of personnel paid with county funds and a list of curriculum purchases.
At the meeting, Representative Keith Kidwell earlier had praised improvements he observed during school tours; other commissioners sharply criticized advertising and curriculum purchases and said the county needs clearer information to decide how its education dollars are used. "We need to know where our money is going and how it is being used to educate children," a commissioner said in urging the requested reporting format.
The motion passed; staff will communicate the board’s request to the school system and the community college and ask them to present this more detailed breakdown during budget preparations so the commissioners can consider approving county funds by purpose and function rather than as a single lump sum.
