The Haywood County Board of Commissioners voted Dec. 1 to approve a $11,337 appropriation from the PSAP fund balance to complete the purchase of eight 911 workstations for the county’s public-safety answering point.
A county staff member explained the expenditure had been preapproved by the PSAP board and that the total project was budgeted at $180,000 in the regular budget; the requested $11,337 would come from PSAP fund balance to finish the purchase. PSAP staff (identified in the meeting as Jen) described the new stations as ergonomic workstations that hold six to eight monitors and support phones, radios and computers for dispatchers who typically work 12-hour shifts.
Jen said the center handled about 168,000 calls last year and that daily volumes typically range from roughly 2,500 to 4,000 on busy days. Commissioners and staff said the old workstations were about 10 years old and that replacing them is routine maintenance to ensure reliability for emergency dispatch operations. A motion to approve the appropriation was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote.
