Granville County commissioners voted Oct. 6 to approve the final one‑year extension for both the convenience-site operations and curbside collection franchise agreements with GFL.
Solid waste staff told the board the contracts became effective Jan. 1, 2020 and included two one‑year extension options. Staff reviewed service history, complaint resolution and adherence to terms, and reported that GFL had not passed recent tipping-fee increases on to franchise customers. The presenter added the company committed to honor a 3.5% consumer price index cap beginning Jan. 1, 2026.
After discussion about service continuity and the plan to solicit competitive proposals next year, a commissioner moved and the board approved the recommended second and final one‑year extension; the contracts will now expire Dec. 31, 2026. Staff said it will advertise Requests for Proposals for both services in early 2026 to ensure open competition.
