Currituck County Schools report shows steady gains; district ranked ninth statewide

Currituck County Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Lutz and Assistant Superintendent Renee Dowdy presented the district's 2024–25 state report-card results to the Currituck County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 3, 2025. Dowdy explained the state's letter-grade system — 80% performance composite, 20% growth — and highlighted how growth measures can reflect students who improve even if they remain below proficiency.

Dr. Lutz said the district has shown steady year-over-year improvement since 2021–22. "We outperformed the state 19 out of 21 areas," he said, and noted Currituck placed ninth out of 115 districts statewide and second among 19 districts in the Northeast Region. He credited targeted teacher-assistant placement and local dollars for supporting classroom instruction and called gains in grades 4 and 5 "hard to get but significant." The presentation highlighted improvements in cohort graduation rates and strong performance in several elementary grade bands.

Commissioners praised staff and asked the administration to share the materials in county communications. Dowdy said the district will provide the board with the presentation and explained that the district receives a small share of federal dollars and relies primarily on state funding supplemented by local support.
