Granville County commissioners on Nov. 17 approved an increase in the hourly rate for the county EMS medical director from $180 to $225 per hour effective Jan. 1, 2026.
Staff explained the position is for approximately 20 hours per month; the additional cost for the remaining six months of FY25–26 was estimated at about $5,400, and next year’s budget projection for the position is approximately $54,000 at the new rate. Commissioners said they had received constituent inquiries and at least one media-related screenshot suggesting an incorrect full-time salary figure; staff and the county manager urged correcting partial or misleading public math and clarified the position is not full time.
Commissioners emphasized that the EMS medical director role is required by law, provides medical direction for first responders and emergency dispatch, and supports MOUD reentry coordination. After the discussion a motion to approve the rate increase carried.
What happens next: county attorney will finalize any necessary contract amendment and the county manager will execute the amendment; staff said they will provide public clarification regarding the hourly basis and annualized costs to avoid further misinterpretation.
