The Stark County Commission voted to amend the employee handbook so that deputies who work on county holidays receive time‑and‑a‑half for hours actually worked, in addition to the standard eight hours of holiday pay.
Joanna Piercy, the county’s human resources director, introduced handbook updates and said the Medicare‑related language was revised to reflect federal rules. Eldon Mairstart of the sheriff’s office urged the board to recognize patrol deputies who must work on holidays, saying that regional law enforcement agencies pay time‑and‑a‑half and that the change would help retention and morale. "Sacrificing that holiday with their families should be recognized," Mairstart said.
Commissioners discussed estimated costs. The sheriff’s office provided a rough estimate of just over $15,000 using 2025 pay rates and full staffing; commissioners noted actual holiday staffing is typically lower and said the expense would be borne from overtime budgets. Commissioner White moved to adopt time‑and‑a‑half for the 10 holidays for sheriff law enforcement; Commissioner Franckuk seconded and the motion carried.
The policy change takes effect administratively; staff were asked to monitor overtime budgets and provide any budget adjustments if necessary.
