Wake County's Happy Trails program recycled thousands of donated Christmas trees into mulch used on county trails, officials said.
In 2024 the program received about 3,800 trees, which were turned into approximately 83 tons of mulch that county crews spread along trail beds to restore nutrients and help trail surfaces, the county said. "It's going to revitalize the trail bed by adding nutrients back into the soil," a county representative said.
The county asked residents who wish to donate their trees to remove all decorations and bring their trees to one of nine designated drop-off locations by Jan. 31. The program reduces landfill waste and helps the county save on trail maintenance costs, officials said.
