Yates Mill water wheel restored and mill returned to operating demonstrations

Work to restore the historic Yates Mill returned the site to operating condition after several months of rehabilitation, county and project staff said.
Project staff described removal and replacement of the flume, gates and water wheel and said iron components from the original wheel were salvaged and reinstalled in the same indexed order to preserve wear patterns. "To be able to bring that back to the community and the people of Wake County is really important," one speaker said.
The restoration allows the mill to operate late 18th- and early 19th-century equipment for public demonstrations and educational programs, project staff said, and the reconstructed wheel and supporting structures were built to ensure longevity and historical fidelity.
County staff framed the project as both preservation and a way to restore the mill's role as a community hub where residents could learn about local history.
