Commission approves sheriff’s contract to provide policing services in Thompson

The Grand Forks County Commission unanimously approved a contract authorizing the sheriff's office to provide policing services to the city of Thompson after the city’s police chief resigned.
Sheriff Schneider told the commission the arrangement mirrors contracts the county has with Northwood and other communities: deputies will provide routine patrol, respond to calls for service and be stationed in Thompson rather than traveling between towns. "We're just providing the training and... experience and more tools and hiring procedures," the sheriff said.
Commissioners discussed a vehicle that Thompson currently owns and that would be integrated into the county fleet after one year if the contract continues. Under the contract, Thompson will retain ownership and insurance responsibility for the first year; on continued service, the vehicle would be signed over to the county and managed under normal fleet rotation.
A county commissioner who had reviewed the contract moved to approve it, and a second followed. The motion passed unanimously.
The commission approved the contract without further conditions; staff and the sheriff’s office will finalize details of vehicle integration and continued service.
Next steps: the county will implement the contract with Thompson and integrate any transferred vehicles into the county fleet during the normal rotation schedule.
