Commission approves $48,000 amendment for Pod 1 repairs at county correctional center

County facilities staff reported a concentrated maintenance effort in Pod 1 of the correctional center that included deep cleaning, epoxy painting, LED lighting retrofit, drain and shower repairs and other repairs to fixtures and doors. Staff said 618 hours of work were logged by nine staff members and that total money spent, including overtime and materials, was $38,602.69.

Facilities staff said most of the spending was covered by a regular $30,000 building-improvement line item and that a deficit of approximately $8,602.69 remained. Staff requested a budget amendment to cover the deficit and to start work in the next pod, which was described as more extensive. Commissioners discussed whether to cover additional near-term needs and to avoid shutting pods later in the winter when overtime and operational impacts could be greater.

After discussion Commissioner (name not stated on the record) proposed increasing the amendment to $48,000 to cover the current shortfall and to allow work to continue; the commission approved the amended amount by voice vote. Staff indicated that part of the $48,000 would be covered from current salary line items for positions that are unfilled and that the building-improvement line renews January 1.

Facilities staff said Pod 2 is in worse condition and estimated that further work could require an additional $45,000–$50,000; the commission asked staff to return with additional cost details and to coordinate with the sheriff’s office on staffing and scheduling.
