Sarpy County seeks additional MAPA funds for 168th Street expansion and bridge replacements

Sarpy County staff asked the board to apply to the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) for $20,000,000 in additional funding on Dec. 9 to support the 168th Street project between Harrison and Highway 370. The county previously received $26.8 million in MAPA program funds for fiscal year 2031 and staff described the current request as an effort to secure additional funding from MAPA's limited allotment.
Deputy Administrator Scott Blobick told commissioners the overall project cost is roughly $80 million; with the existing $26.8 million award and a potential additional $20 million the county would be far along in funding the project. Staff said the city of Gretna, the city of Omaha and Douglas County have been supportive and that the county will likely learn the status of the application around May 2026.
Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the application during the meeting. Staff noted the MAPA call for projects this year is limited to providing additional funding to projects previously funded and cautioned that $20 million may represent the full allotment available; nevertheless the county will submit an application to underscore the project's priority.
The board's approval advances the county's effort to assemble the funding package needed to expand 168th Street and replace two bridges, while staff continues coordination with partner jurisdictions and awaits MAPA's decision.
