Society for the Preservation of the Gruber Wagon Works presents $26,984 to Berks County

Barry Kaufman, executive director of the Society for the Preservation of the Gruber Wagon Works, presented the society’s annual contribution to Berks County during the Board of Commissioners’ Dec. 11 meeting.
“We are here to support the county in their efforts to maintain the Wagon Works,” Kaufman said, and announced the society’s donation in the amount of $26,984.00. Kaufman recounted the society’s founding in 1983 and preservation efforts over decades, including a story about former county commissioner Vernon Schaeffer’s role in keeping the Wagon Works in Berks County.
Brendan, who identified himself as director of the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department, introduced Kaufman and the staff attending the meeting. Commissioners and staff thanked the society for its long-term support of the Gruber Wagon Works and the Heritage Center. Kaufman suggested the Vernon Schaeffer story be mounted on a bronze plaque at the Wagon Works; commissioners and staff expressed support for recognizing the county’s preservation history.
The presentation was brief and largely ceremonial: Kaufman emphasized continuity of volunteer and society support for the Wagon Works and noted the organization is preparing to continue contributions in future years. The commissioners acknowledged the gift and its benefits to the county’s Heritage Center.
