Greenwood County on Dec. 16 authorized a timber harvest on roughly 181 acres of county-owned landfill property on Siloam Church Road and empowered the county manager to finalize contracts.
Jamie Smith, public works assistant director, said a consultant recommended harvesting now because the timber market is declining. Staff described the process as unit-based pricing that will convert to tonnage when the harvest begins. The high bid listed in the staff packet was $284,874 from Charles K. Doolittle, Inc. Smith said proceeds would be deposited to the landfill fund and the county intends to budget for replanting all 181 acres in the FY2027 budget.
The contract would require harvest completion by Jan. 1, 2027. Council approved the motion to accept the bid and authorized the county manager to sign and negotiate documents as needed.
