The Sequatchie County Commission unanimously adopted a proclamation supporting the Sequatchie County Agricultural Traffic Safety Initiative at its Nov. 17 meeting. Presenters said the county’s national Scenic Byways designation and rising visitor traffic increase the risk of collisions with slow‑moving farm equipment.
John Harmon and members of the farming community told the commission the initiative will identify agricultural zones and place prominent signage to alert motorists. Harmon described the goal plainly: “This traffic safety initiative is to bring awareness to the motoring public that potential hazards may exist in these working farming communities.”
Commissioners discussed sign design and placement; the meeting record shows the signs will use a chartreuse background to increase visibility and will read messages such as “Slow down — farms and families at work. Your speed equals their safety.” The initiative was described as complementary to the county’s Heritage Farm program and will include community outreach and placement in identified agricultural areas.
County staff and commissioners said the signs are being ordered and installation will follow identification of target locations. The proclamation appears in the meeting packet and the adoption was recorded beginning at SEG 1090 through SEG 1215 in the transcript.
