Smithville’s City Council approved a budget amendment on second reading to buy a used fire truck for $475,000.
Council approved Ordinance 539, which amends the city’s fiscal 2025–26 budget to fund the purchase. A motion to adopt the ordinance on second reading was made, seconded and passed by roll call: Jessica Higgins, Donnie Crook, Beth Chandler, Shawn Jacobs and Danny Washer voted yes.
The move follows a public hearing earlier in the meeting on the fire-truck purchase. Council members said city and department leaders inspected the vehicle. Charlie, who spoke during the meeting about the department’s review, said the team ‘‘made a day trip to Texas, to see, drive, touch the truck,’’ and negotiated price and extra equipment. He added the truck now has new tires and batteries and ‘‘about $8,000 worth of extra options’’ included.
Council also noted that Chief Parker, Deputy Chief Jeff Wright and Bradley Johnson participated in the inspection and recommended proceeding. The ordinance passed on second reading; the council indicated the purchase will move forward and that the vehicle should meet the department’s needs for several years.
The meeting concluded with holiday remarks and a reminder of a Dec. 15 workshop.
