The Smith County Board of Commissioners approved two convenience-site lease renewals after a positive recommendation from the solid waste commission.
Staff explained the leases cover county convenience sites located on privately owned land. The county attempted to negotiate purchases but the landowners declined; the commission therefore renegotiated and extended both leases to 10-year terms. Annual payments were increased: one site will cost $6,000 per year and the other $3,000 per year under the new agreements. "This is just our leases for our convenience sites for the land that we don't own... we renegotiated and extended it to a 10 year term," the Chair said while explaining the contracts.
Commission discussion noted the increase and that leasing remains cheaper than acquiring or building replacement sites. The clerk conducted a roll-call vote and the lease renewals were approved.
