Resident urges DeKalb leaders to 'throw out the band aid strategy' and finish zoning process

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, Steve Cantrell, who identified himself as "District 5," urged county leaders to develop short- and long-term strategic goals rather than relying on ad-hoc fixes.
"Please throw out the band aid strategy this body and its many predecessors have been using to address both reoccurring and new problems demanding taxpayers' hard earned dollars," Cantrell said, urging preventive maintenance schedules for county facilities and equipment.
Cantrell urged commissioners to finish the zoning process with substantial citizen involvement; he said an earlier proposed zoning map showed "almost 90% of the county is agriculture" and argued that a completed zoning map would provide a "tripwire" to guide where industry, mining and other commercial uses may locate. He also referenced a mayoral resolution reportedly under consideration about "nuclear powered data centers," asking why such items were being proposed and urging the commission to set clear policy goals to protect the county.
Cantrell closed by encouraging commissioners to listen to both supporters and opponents of zoning and wished everyone a happy and healthy new year.
