Rhea County Commission approves grants, budget amendments and refers floodplain resolution to planning commission

The commission approved a resolution to contract with the Southeast Tennessee Development District for grant administration for the Morgantown Park and playground project, with a maximum administration fee of $7,500. The body also accepted Grant Amendment 2 from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation in the amount of $73,260 to extend a grant term to Jan. 31, 2026, and accepted a separate state grant amendment for $48,969 to extend terms to Jan. 31, 2026, as read into the record.
Separately, the commission accepted $19,869 in funding for the Rhea County Archives to preserve historic county records as part of the America’s 250th project; that resolution was presented and approved by roll call.
Chair then presented a resolution relating to adoption of a regional floodplain/development zone and asked for referral to the Rhea County Regional Planning Commission for review of required standards; the commission voted to refer the matter and asked the county building inspector and staff to assist with paperwork and regional submission.
Tourism director Alex Stein requested guidance on department-led fundraising for a community event; commissioners advised that funds raised would be county funds and the commission must vote on how raised funds are spent, recommending the tourism director seek advance approval and that a resolution be placed on the next agenda to clarify use and designation.
The meeting paused as the chair called for an executive session later in the agenda.
