Newton County commissioners on Nov. 13 discussed an unresolved intercounty funding issue after staff reported Jasper County had not forwarded grant funds previously paid to a VFW to Newton County'9s Veterans Office.
Speaker 1 said the Newton County Veterans Office previously handled cases for both Jasper and Newton counties and that Jasper County had been paying roughly $8,000 to $10,000 annually to a VFW; Speaker 1 said Jasper County'9s disbanding of that provider has complicated past arrangements and that Jasper has not forwarded the money to Newton County. Speaker 2 and others described the situation as unfair to Newton County veterans, and speakers said they are continuing to negotiate with Jasper County to secure the funds or determine whether the grants must be returned to a state provider or rolled into Jasper'9s general fund.
No formal action was taken during the meeting; the item was provided as an update and the court noted the matter for follow-up.
