Val Verde County authorizes sheriff to sign SB8 MOU, adopts warrant-officer model

The Val Verde County Commissioners Court authorized Sheriff Bill Craig Martinez to sign a memorandum of agreement under Texas Senate Bill 8. The sheriff explained the county would adopt the least-intrusive option available — a warrant-officer model — because the county lacks manpower for a task-force model and does not qualify for the jail enforcement-officer option.
Under the adopted model the sheriff’s office will identify a warrant officer and the county jail monitor will complete required online training. The sheriff and staff said there is no additional county funding associated with this model; the court approved the authorization.
Commissioners asked whether any funding accompanied the choice; the sheriff said no funding comes with the warrant-officer model, while the task-force model had once-off vehicle or equipment allowances in other jurisdictions. The court recorded the motion and approved the action during the meeting.
