Val Verde County court authorizes new grant applications for trails and water projects

County leaders discussed several potential grant applications to advance trails and waterline projects. Judge Owens said a previously submitted $2 million grant for trails remains pending and the court could apply for a $300,000 non-motorized trails grant and a $500,000 motorized-trails grant for other properties the county set aside.
The judge also discussed applying for funding for booster pump stations to help the Escondido water project and suggested including looped connections to increase water pressure in areas where the city has requested lines be connected. Staff and commissioners noted that recent bids for other projects came back significantly higher than budgeted but that the grants could alleviate cost pressure.
Commissioner Vasquez seconded a motion to compile the list of grant projects and submit applications by the January 8 deadline; the motion passed 5-0.
The court asked staff to prepare project lists and pricing to support the applications and said bids for related construction would return to commissioners for final award or rebid decisions.
