Elections staff briefed the Val Verde County Commissioners on Jan. 4 about actions taken after a recent election audit, including correcting precinct‑assignment errors, preparing written procedures for statements of residence (SOR) and provisional ballots, and adopting new poll‑pad features that permit on‑site address updates.
Why it matters: Accurate precinct assignments and clear SOR procedures reduce provisional ballots and administrative errors on election day. County staff said they have corrected a number of street‑level precinct mismatches and will provide written procedures to the court for review before the next election.
What staff said: The elections official reported they have not yet received a full response from the Secretary of State audit team on some questions, but that field checks and software corrections have fixed many mismatches. Staff explained new poll‑pad functionality will allow an individual who has moved within the county to complete an SOR at the polling place, have their address immediately updated in the poll pad, and vote in their new precinct; the SOR must then be sent to voter registration for a permanent record update.
Outstanding issues: Staff asked commissioners to provide names of voters with known precinct problems so they can be included in logic and accuracy checks 48 hours before the election. The elections office also sought confirmation that written SOR and provisional ballot procedures be added to the commissioners’ binders.
Quote: Elections official: "If they fill out that SOR... we can go ahead and immediately correct their address in that poll pad. They will now vote in their new precinct."
What’s next: Elections staff will provide written procedures and perform logic and accuracy tests ahead of the next election; the court asked to have the procedures included in the next meeting packet.
