Willacy County court approves several personnel, stipend and interim-pay measures; budget amendments to follow

Willacy County Commissioners Court on Oct. 9 approved a package of personnel and payroll items, including interim continuation of payroll tied to grant funding, a one-time stipend, and hiring authorizations.
County staff asked the court to permit continued payment of district attorney employees funded by victim-assistance and prosecution grants while activation of FY2026 grants is pending. The county auditor said one grant was confirmed and others were likely to follow the same process; the court approved continuing payroll in the interim.
The court also approved a $3,000 stipend to the district attorney victim-assistant coordinator (to be paid from VA fund 50 in a one-time lump sum if the budget amendment is approved). Separately, the court approved a part-time intake clerk position (no more than 24 hours per week at $12.50/hour, funded from Fund 50) and authorized hiring a district attorney investigator with a salary up to $70,000 (fund source to be DA funds 850/860 or DA fund 50/60 depending on availability). Commissioners asked staff to return with any required budget amendments and to consider part-time options if full funding is not available.
Commissioner Garcia moved to approve these items; the court voted in favor.
