South Texas School Board Association presents regional partnership; Willacy County tables membership for later review

Representatives of the newly formed South Texas School Board Association (STSBA) presented to the Willacy County Commissioners Court on Nov. 13 seeking county partnership and founding-member status for a regional civic investment partnership.
Ruben Cortez and David Gores described the group’s purpose as creating a regional voice for school districts and public entities across Deep South Texas to address legislative priorities, broadband, workforce readiness, and equitable opportunities. They proposed Willacy County host the STSBA’s inaugural 'Bridging the Rural Divide' South Texas Voices event in 2026 and noted two of the county’s school districts had already engaged the association.
Commissioners voiced support for collaboration but requested more time to digest materials and consult school-board members and other officials before committing Willacy County as a founding partner. A motion to table the membership decision to the next scheduled meeting was made and passed by voice vote.
Presenters offered to meet individually with commissioners between meetings to discuss details and answer questions. The court will place the item on the next meeting agenda for potential action.
