Walker County adopts revised precinct maps, creates new voting box to align with congressional lines

Walker County Commissioners Court voted on Dec. 15 to adopt revised precinct maps that redraw several precinct boundaries and adjust voting boxes after changes to the congressional map. County elections staff presented two options and recommended measures to avoid adding a new polling place where possible.
The court adopted Option B, which preserves the area in Precinct 4 by creating a new voting box labeled 406 while eliminating Voting Box 405 and absorbing affected voters into Voting Box 403. Miss McCray, the county mapping staffer, said the changes were needed because several precincts were split by the new congressional line and “we're eliminating Precinct Voting Box 405. So the people will just now be in 403 instead.”
Commissioners asked whether the changes would add polling places or increase costs; staff said the plan avoids creating additional poll sites and should not raise taxpayer expense. Miss McCray noted that some areas will move between Precincts 1–4 and that a new voting box 105 will be created where congressional-line adjustments required it.
The motion to adopt the maps as presented was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. The court held the redistricting discussion in open session after a brief executive session on a related personnel/recusal matter.
What's next: county elections staff will implement the revised precinct assignments and notify affected voters according to state timelines for precinct boundary changes.
