Willacy County authorizes Veterans Office to apply for $150,000 TVC general assistance grant

Willacy County Commissioners Court on Oct. 9 authorized the county veterans office to apply for the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) General Assistance grant for fiscal year 2026–27, asking for the same amount the county requested previously.
Veterans services staff told the court the grant application opened Oct. 1 and said the office is seeking $150,000. The presenter reported that, under the current grant year that began July 1, 2025, the office “has assisted 30 veterans and 12 surviving spouses” and handled roughly 400-plus client contacts.
The funding supports short-term assistance — including utilities, funeral costs and limited emergency aid — for veterans and surviving spouses, staff said. Commissioners voted to authorize the application and instructed staff to proceed with the paperwork and related budget adjustments.
The court congratulated staff on recent awards and directed staff to provide photos for the county’s records; approval of the application will be followed by standard grant administration and any necessary budget amendments if the award is made.
