Willacy County approves purchase of patrol rifles and accessories for sheriff's office

Willacy County’s Commissioners Court voted Nov. 13 to approve the sheriff’s request to purchase patrol rifles and associated components to replace equipment the office described as more than 10 years old.
A sheriff’s representative said the request covers 12 patrol rifles, six M4 uppers and 18 optics/accessories. The combined purchase order from Lone Star Guns of Harlingen was presented as a not-to-exceed $33,000 capital expenditure, with staff noting the county’s capital fund would cover the payment initially and that reimbursements would come from revenue streams such as US Marshals reimbursements.
Commissioners discussed the funding flow and the procedure of transferring funds from the capital account and returning as reimbursement in a future budget action. The motion to approve the purchase and the process for subsequent transfer/reimbursement was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
County staff said further bookkeeping will be completed at the next meeting when a transfer of funds is presented for ratification.
Next steps: Purchasing staff to issue purchase order to vendor and prepare a budget transfer/reimbursement for approval at a subsequent commissioners’ meeting.
