Willacy County approves up to $7,100 for constable precinct 5 patrol-unit equipment, requests radar quotes

Willacy County Commissioners on Nov. 13 authorized funding to outfit a new precinct 5 patrol unit with lights, siren, PA, camera activation and related brackets and wiring.
Constable Flores presented two written quotes: $6,059.35 for equipment and a separate $1,000 labor charge, for a combined total of $7,059.35. The constable said striping was already on the vehicle and that the quoted setup would include lights on the grill guard, side and rear skirts, visor-mounted lights, siren and PA system, and radio integration.
Commissioners discussed the option of repurposing older equipment but were advised that warranty and compatibility concerns can make used components unreliable when paired with new systems. Commissioner De La Paz urged the constable to gather quotes for radar and speed-detection equipment as an additional safety feature; the constable agreed to obtain estimates.
The court amended the authorization to $7,100 to allow slight overage, directed the appropriation from the general/capital fund as available, and authorized the county judge to approve other bids. The motion passed by voice vote.
Next steps: constable will obtain radar quotes and present options; county staff will finalize vendor paperwork and capital-fund transfer as needed.
