Commissioners approve $5,000 hot-funds payment for Alamo Letter Society plaque at county courthouse

Chambers County commissioners on Oct. 28 approved participation in an Alamo Letter Society program and authorized payment of $5,000 from hotel-occupancy (hot) funds to secure a bronze recast of William Barrett Travis's "victory or death" letter for display at the Chambers County Courthouse.
County staff (Skyler Wheat and other staff) said the plaque is intended to highlight Chambers County's historical ties to early Texas history and that the county would host a public event around the plaque's installation next summer. Staff said the historical commission is involved and the county will coordinate educational and ceremonial programming with local schools and organizations.
Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the expenditure and participation. Staff noted that the plaque would be delivered next summer and that hot-fund tourism dollars were the proposed funding source.
