Court approves contingency contract for delinquent-collections; county receives updated delinquent-tax report

The Commissioners Court approved a contingent-fee agreement with a collections firm to pursue delinquent government receivables and accepted the firm’s updated delinquent-tax and court fine-and-fee collection report on Nov. 12.
A firm representative explained courts will forward delinquent items 60 days after delinquency for collection and that the firm operates on a contingency basis — paid from recovered amounts and not by the county. The firm reported a previously stated $1.7 million outstanding delinquent tax base had been revised to approximately $1.3 million after more recent reports. For the 2024 tax year, $705,772 was turned over on July 1 and the firm reported collection progress of 41.56% through the most recent month.
The representative described collection methods including phone outreach, databases, and a substantial increase in text messaging (from 13,442 messages in April to 60,693 at the time of the presentation) and reiterated that the firm is paid from collections. The court approved both the contract and the proposed fee by recorded motion and subsequently accepted the firm's report.
Commissioners and the district clerk discussed staffing pressures in the clerk's office and the court noted it would monitor results and receive periodic updates.
