Chambers County commissioners voted Oct. 28 to allow installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box at EMS Station 2 (3180), approving a contract that county legal has reviewed and that county staff said requires a 24/7 manned location.
The device is an electronically monitored, lockable box that allows anonymous surrender of newborns up to six months. Presenters said the box triggers an alarm when its outer door opens and a second alarm when a weighted plate detects an infant; EMS personnel will respond and access the interior from inside.
County staff and members of the Chambers County Republican Women said the organization will fundraise approximately $25,000 to purchase and install the box and will cover a recurring $500-per-year fee. Staff told the court the location meets program requirements (generator power and a manned station) and that the county will permit walking-trail connections from the new Beach City Park.
Commissioners moved and seconded the item and recorded an affirmative vote to approve the location and contract. The presenters emphasized that the program is intended to protect infant safety while remaining anonymous for the surrendering parent.
