The King George County Board of Supervisors on its year-end meeting authorized the county administrator to finalize multi-year maintenance and SUA contract documents with Motorola for the county’s public-safety radio system. Staff said the contract figure presented in the packet is $6,382,006.02 and that negotiations since July produced cumulative savings of roughly $1.2 million compared with earlier proposals.
Staff and board discussion focused on what would be cut under deeper cost reductions (cybersecurity, microwave coverage and vendor support) and the county’s limited in-house technical capacity to perform specialized maintenance. One board member said reducing vendor services could leave the county “on its own” for complex cybersecurity and hardware response, while others urged continued negotiation; Motorola representatives were present to answer technical questions.
A motion to authorize the county administrator to prepare and execute contract documents (subject to county-attorney review) passed on a roll-call vote. Most supervisors voted aye; Supervisor Terrence “TC” Collins recorded a nay. Staff said Motorola agreed to waive charges for a four-month overlap period and overall concessions contributed to the stated $1.2 million in savings. The county attorney and procurement staff will finalize the documents for execution.
What's next: county staff will finalize the contract language with Motorola and return the signed documents and procurement files as required by county policy.
