Eden Parks & Recreation director Ray Thomas detailed recent and planned upgrades at Freedom Park as part of a longer push to make the park a regional sports and recreation hub.
Upgrades listed: staff converted one large field into three to create five total ballfields (including a dedicated clay T‑ball field), installed LED stadium lighting on the multipurpose field to extend practice hours and host events, completed a splash pad and built four pickleball courts (Wi‑Fi lighting control), added a 10‑space RV area, a dog park donated in partnership with Purina, a mini‑golf feature and amphitheater improvements (dance platform). Staff also mentioned a proposed skateboard park improvement and plans to host NC Cycle overnight stays.
Funding and partners: Thomas credited grant work and local advocacy — naming Sen. Phil Berger and Rep. Reese Pirtle among those who aided funding — and said local corporate partners (including Purina) supported specific amenities.
Why it matters: The improvements are intended to boost youth sports, attract tournaments and create year‑round recreational opportunities that support local businesses. Park leaders said stabilized, multi‑use facilities can host tournaments, youth leagues and seasonal events that draw regional visitors.
Next steps: Parks staff plan to correct court lighting issues, finalize operating hours and prepare fields for tournament play in the new year. Officials signaled an expectation of increasing visitation tied to WinterFest and planned events.
