Sturgeon Bay resident urges county to sell idle Yonkers building, disclose holding costs

Randy Morrow, a Sturgeon Bay resident and longtime local civic volunteer, asked the Door County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 26 to move to sell a county‑owned retail building in downtown Sturgeon Bay (referred to in public comment as the Yonkers Building) that the county acquired more than six years earlier and has kept largely vacant.
Morrow said the property previously produced about $120,000 in annual tax revenue and that its vacancy has required the county to cover maintenance costs and forego that revenue. He said the building is out of compliance with modern codes and represents a missed opportunity for downtown revitalization and tax base support. Morrow urged the board to publicly disclose all costs associated with acquisition and holding, clarify any plans or feasibility studies, and begin a transparent sale or RFP process that encourages local investment and reinvestment of proceeds into infrastructure and small business support.
The chair thanked Morrow for his comments; no formal motion was recorded at the meeting. The request may be directed to county administration for follow up and possible future agenda consideration.
