St. Croix County launches private-well nitrate testing with $10,000 grant

St. Croix County Health & Human Services announced on Dec. 17 that it received a $10,000 'Taking Action with Data' grant to increase private-well nitrate testing and public outreach.
Public health strategist Genevieve Palazzolo said the grant, obtained by staff member Laura Diaby, will fund additional testing clinics, pre- and post-treatment screenings to track whether interventions reduce nitrate levels, and community outreach including a survey (more than 130 responses to date) that is built to map respondents by county and municipality. Palazzolo said the survey will remain open through April or May 2026 to maximize response and that she will analyze results to target future work.
A 'Know Your Water' nitrate-awareness workshop and screening is scheduled for February 2026. Palazzolo said the county will report pre/post screening results as part of the evaluation work.
