County updates mutual-aid agreement to include towns and state agencies, authorizes county administrator to sign
Summary
After consultation with the commonwealth’s attorney (Mr. Blevins), the board authorized staff to update and execute an updated mutual-aid agreement covering the sheriff, town police departments and the Department of Conservation and Recreation; the board approved the authorization by voice vote.
Smyth County staff told the board that, after discussion with the commonwealth’s attorney, the county should update its mutual-aid agreement (originally adopted in the early 2010s) to reflect current law-enforcement partners. Unidentified Speaker 2 said the updated agreement would include the sheriff’s office, town police departments (including Chilhowie and Marion police), the Department of Conservation and Recreation and other local law-enforcement agencies. The county asked the board to authorize the county administrator to execute the revised agreement.
Supervisors noted questions about whether certain entities — for example a local community college — are covered and urged staff to verify radio interoperability and other operational details. Mr. Blevins (the commonwealth’s attorney) reviewed the draft and staff indicated they would bring back a revised agreement if additional entities needed to be added.
The board moved and seconded a motion to approve the authorization; the board approved the authorization by voice vote and the chairman declared the motion carried.
