Residents urge clearer reporting on ICE contacts and equitable early-voting access

Walker said her public-records requests (OPA) returned no records until a recent September 13 report was provided. She said such reports are important to understand when federal agents appear on county property and urged the board to ensure they are reliably produced and shared. She also cited disparate early-voting access during the June primary: Union City — representing about 8% of county voters — had 10 early-voting sites and about 90% of its voters lived within a quarter mile of a site, whereas Jersey City — nearly 40% of county voters — had fewer sites, with only 16% of voters within a quarter mile.
Commissioners acknowledged the concerns; one suggested a protocol to forward sheriff reports related to ICE activity to the public safety committee, and another requested an election official report on site distribution and cost to evaluate a proportional allocation by population and proximity.
No formal policy was adopted in the meeting. Commissioners and staff agreed to pursue follow-up reporting and outreach to ensure improved access and transparency.
