Scott County economic-development staff report regional wins and new regional push

Economic-development staff updated the Scott County Board of Commissioners on recent business-attraction and workforce activity and previewed a push toward more formal regional cooperation.
Staff said that since January their team worked on 21 projects involving properties within Scott County and completed 27 industry visits. Regionwide tallies showed 852 attraction and retention project announcements across Clark, Floyd and Scott counties, with just over $56 million in added annual payroll and nearly $700 million in capital investment. Scott County’s portion was cited as 220 jobs, roughly $12.5 million in added annual payroll and about $80 million in capital investment.
The presenter said the office is close to finalizing a private-company event tied to Comcast and the Department of Defense scheduled for Feb. 5, and that a digital version of presentation materials and a new regional recruitment magazine (a partnership with Livability Media) will be circulated to local officials and stakeholders.
Staff also described workforce efforts with regional partners, naming Southern Indiana Works, American Classic Molding and Oregon Foods, and said they are auditing training equipment inventory with Ivy Tech and a vendor, Anetron, to determine operability and usefulness.
On broader strategy, staff described a state-level move toward a single point of entry for regional economic work. The presenter said he was invited to a 15-person work group to help develop a toolkit for regions and that the county has been building relationships with neighboring jurisdictions to align priorities under the governor’s regional framework.
Commissioners asked about representation on regional bodies and site-readiness for large parcels; staff proposed forming an executive council that would give municipal and county partners seats at a smaller table to set consensus priorities and accelerate proactive development over a 3–10 year horizon.
The board did not take a formal vote on the regional-framework proposal at the meeting; staff said they will continue outreach and return with more specifics.
