Camp Trinity's request for county land tabled until January for site review

Representatives of Camp Trinity asked Randolph County commissioners for a small parcel—about 6.4 acres—of county land to site a pond, septic systems and space for an additional dorm and kitchen. James Strong and Paul Kirkpatrick described the camp’s recent work, the need for additional water and septic capacity because the site lacks city water, and permitting hurdles such as state septic approvals and sprinkler requirements for dormitories.

Commissioners said they would inspect the site and check the farm lease and any real-estate implications before making a decision. The chair proposed moving the item to the second meeting in January to allow staff site visits and follow-up; a motion to table until that meeting was seconded and approved by voice vote.

Camp Trinity representatives said the property is currently farmed under lease and that, even if the county donated the requested parcel, development likely would not begin immediately because of permitting, permitting timelines, and the lease in place. Commissioners emphasized due diligence—site visit, lease review, and consultation with county real-estate staff—before any land conveyance or lease-break decision.

Next steps: commissioners will arrange site visits, review lease status and return to the item at the second January meeting; Camp Trinity was advised to submit written materials for the record.
