Consultant Mike Kleinpeter told Fayette County commissioners the county was awarded $500,000 from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs for an owner‑occupied rehabilitation program to help homeowners with repairs such as roofs, HVAC, hot water heaters and ADA accessibility upgrades.
Kleinpeter said the maximum award per household is $25,000 and that applications are available at the public library, the auditor’s office and Joleesa Bates’ office. Applications are due in October; the county will conduct an application review in November followed by required environmental and radon testing before construction work begins (likely the following spring).
The commission unanimously approved a professional grant‑administration agreement with Kleinpeter Consulting Group to manage the project. Kleinpeter told commissioners the grant is federal money routed through the state and that his firm will serve as certified grant administrator under HUD‑required procedures for environmental reviews. "We were one of three communities selected this round," he said.
Commissioners asked staff to publicize application locations and the per‑household income limits that appear on the front page of the application; the consultant and auditor will coordinate outreach and initial environmental steps.
