Storey County adopts 2024 International Codes with local modification for snow loads

David Nair of Community Development reviewed the revised option: the county will adopt the 2024 International Codes (building, residential, energy conservation, fuel gas, mechanical), the 2024 uniform mechanical and plumbing codes, the 2023 National Electric Code, the 2024 International Fire Code, the 2024 International Wildland‑Urban Interface Code, and relevant NFPA standards, along with the 2024 Northern Nevada amendments. Nair said page 15 of the Northern Nevada amendments was amended to preserve Story County’s existing snow‑load requirements for risk categories 1 and 2.
"The snow load requirements for sheds, barns, homes, businesses, and offices will remain unchanged and consistent with prior code cycles," Nair said, explaining the county’s intent to respect local conditions while aligning with the updated model codes.
Commissioner Mitchell moved to approve the second reading; the motion passed by a unanimous voice vote.
What this means: Story County will use the 2024 model codes for construction and safety standards, but will continue to apply established local snow‑load values for specified risk categories. The county’s adoption includes the Northern Nevada amendments and Story County‑specific adjustments recorded in the ordinance text.
