Ware County approves five‑year airport capital improvement plan to preserve federal grant eligibility

The Ware County Board of Commissioners approved a five‑year capital improvement plan (CIP) for the Waycross–Ware County Airport at the Oct. 27 meeting, clearing the path for engineers to apply for federal and state grant funds to support runway resurfacing and other airport improvements.

County staff said the plan is necessary to remain eligible for grant funds and described the usual funding split for airport projects: 90% federal, roughly 5% state and 5% local. Staff reviewed several phases listed in the plan, including design and construction phases for Runway 119 and subsequent lighting and signage work. Staff identified a total project cost figure in the meeting materials and presented the county share for the board’s assessment.

Airport manager Meadows described recent operational improvements — secure after‑hours access for pilots, a new FAA‑approved flight simulator available for training and increased outreach to local pilots and flight schools — and said those improvements have been well received. Commissioners praised the improvements and asked clarifying questions about timing and county share. Staff confirmed local funds would come from the airport fund or county accounts.

A motion to approve the five‑year CIP was made, seconded and approved by the commission on the record.

What happens next: With board approval the county will submit CIP materials and engineering scopes to pursue federal and state grant applications and complete the required local match budgeting and procurement steps.
