County staff member Allison Palmer briefed the board on the option after a recent outage that left phones and internet down for about 16 hours. Palmer said the FirstNet device would not replace the sheriff's full system but would maintain essential connectivity in an emergency. "It's somewhere between $800 and $1,000, and it runs about $110 a month," Palmer said.
Commissioners discussed how the purchase would be funded. Palmer told the board the equipment cost is small enough that it would be paid from the county general fund rather than from SPLOST proceeds. She said the recurring monthly service charge also will come from the sheriff's general budget.
A commissioner moved to approve the purchase; the motion was seconded and the chair announced the motion carried by voice vote. The board did not record individual roll-call votes in the transcript.
The decision directs staff to proceed with procurement of the FirstNet device and to charge the one-time equipment cost and ongoing service to the county general fund and the sheriff's operating budget, respectively. The board moved next to other business and later recessed into executive session for personnel and legal matters.
