Red Cross seeks volunteers, lists sheltering and smoke‑alarm help for Scott County residents

A regional American Red Cross representative told the board the organization provides family assistance, shelter support, mental‑health teams, canteen services and smoke‑alarm installations, and asked for help recruiting volunteers locally.
Sharon Dixon described the Red Cross’ role in recent regional responses, noted that many disaster survivors lack insurance, and explained that the chapter installs 10‑year sealed smoke alarms for free as part of its home‑fire campaign. "We have been installing about 200 smoke alarms in your area since we've been doing this," she said, and encouraged residents to enroll as volunteers via redcross.org/volunteer.
Supervisors agreed to post the volunteer contact on the county website and to help share materials. Dixon also outlined services to support first responders on long calls (food, hydration, rest) and recommended local coordination on sheltering plans and hotel/airbnb outreach for disaster surges.
No county funding request was made at the meeting, but staff said they would add volunteer information to the county site and explore volunteer outreach.
